I'm not disappointed, it is a fascinating read.
I have a few questions, please would it be possible to get in contact with you via email? I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Glenn Holberton
glenn@holberton.net
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8594427462892774051.post-42257247739207713952013-11-24T07:30:50.381-08:002013-11-24T07:30:50.381-08:00Ha! I truly hope it will be possible but we shall see. The SA Post Office is launching a book of stamps next week commemorating the 12 trialists (my father included) which is such a huge honour! Details can be found on the Liliesleaf facebook page. I had no idea about this and found out accidentally but glad I did!!

Eric, thanks so much for your very kind words and goodness mentioning that little known fact about me!! I wholeheartedly agree about carrying on with spreading the message about what these extraordinary people did in their lifetimes. I have done a few school talks in my kid's schools. I'm not sure how much was actually heard but it did seem to up their street cred (haha) so maybe just maybe someone heard something they will remember....

Keith please let me know if you were unable to get hold of a copy of the book as I do have a couple and would gladly lend this to you. I very weirdly got a copy this year that was signed by my father, needless to say that one isn't leaving my possession.

Anyway I am so glad to have found this blog again and I wish you all my best!

Kindest

Tanya Tanyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03081629052724852342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8594427462892774051.post-63115912902387347762013-11-24T07:04:17.264-08:002013-11-24T07:04:17.264-08:00Gosh did my comment to all of your kind words publ...Gosh did my comment to all of your kind words publish or has it disappeared into the ether? I have the Seven Seas Edition, a publihing house which was disbanded after the Wende in 1990. I would recommend you try Hamish Hamilton in London. Maybe they can advise you further. My father, John Stannard, spoke warmly of his friendship with Jimmy as young men in JHB. I was unaware of the book which I will now search for and read. Great article, Thanks.
Keith. I agree that A Healthy Grave ...Dear Tanya and Alan. I agree that A Healthy Grave is a gem and should, like other books that have been written by struggle participants, be used in our school curriculum for our kids who must be taught that our liberation did not fall like Mannah from Heaven or from a Christmas tree. Alan, I am convinced that Nadine did a fantastic job in reviewing your book which I hope to read soon. I knew both Ruth and Joe very closely at home and much more Joe in exile. He was a frequent visitor to East Berlin and loved the curry that I prepared for him. In 1976 Joe invited the ANC and SACP delegations to the SED Party Congress for dinner in my tiny flat. That consisted of Alfred Nzo and Joe Modise (ANC) plus Dr Dadoo and Joe (SACP) and a dozen or more of our comrades locally. My neighbours must have really wondered what the hell is going on when our little street was suddenly full of security cars. That was a great evening. Joe's visit were always welcome since we were so starved of news from the homefront and the BBC was our main source of information.
I believe that Bob Hepple has written his version of the events surrounding Rivonia. This is necessary and I believe for reasons given above, it is an absolute necessity that comrades pen down their experiences for future use. Cde Madiba is of the same opinion when he wrote a forward to SHADES OF DIFFERENCE. Madiba averred: New nations in particular must have a memory bank in order to establish a strong sense of collective identity. We deposit our stories into the memory bank and draw on our collective account in moments of uncertainty or crisis, or to remember who we are and how we got to where we are.....There is a need for foot soldiers to teel their stories too. No one is born a leader or rises to leading by birth.
How true. There is still a lot to be written. For example, I offered to lead a team to write about the women whose husbands were jailed, hanged or forced into exile. How did they exist? What were their feelings. For instance the family of Vusi Mini. This man was hanged and his wife was left to tender for the children. Then in the process one of the girls Mary (MK name) who had now become a young woman, joined the exile community and was a member of the ANC cultural group AMANDLA. In an interview with me at the ANC Mission in 1982 here in East Berlin, she responded my question of what brought her to the ranks of MK. The answer was straight forward. "I came to pick up the spear my father dropped". Mary was murdered by South African forces in Lesotho in 1986. Unfortunately, my suggestion to my leadership fell on deaf years.
That is why young people like Tanya have a lot to do to fill in the gap. Beginning with herself. The 50th anniversary of the opening of the Rivonia Trials will be observed at the UNESCO HQs in Paris on 16 July 2013. I never met your father but srange as it may seem, at the moment I am reading A Healthy Grave at the moment in preparation for an article I will be doing for some of the African media here in Germany after the Paris Indaba. I've never met your father, but he was a hero. I am glad that you think so too.
All the best and lots of good wishes from an old cadre.
Eric Singh - Berlin - 4 July 2013Eric Singhnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8594427462892774051.post-34811967584357393312013-06-16T15:27:52.515-07:002013-06-16T15:27:52.515-07:00I googled my father's name (James Kantor) toni...I googled my father's name (James Kantor) tonight, being curious as to whether there was a wiki page about him. I found to my surprise and delight your retro-review! With his book having been out of print for such a long time I had no idea that someone may have read it recently. I have given my copy to a few people to read, people that have been interested to know about an alternative perspective of that part of history.

Thank you for your review and breathing some life into A Healthy Grave!

Best wishes

TanyaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8594427462892774051.post-48002728357182962522013-05-17T10:35:23.085-07:002013-05-17T10:35:23.085-07:00Terrific piece.
